How to get to Venice

By plane

Venice International Airport “Marco Polo” (Vce)

Website: www.veniceairport.it

Venice Marco Polo Airport is located on the Italian mainland about 12km from Venice. It is connected with 69 cities non-stop and about 53 Venice flights operate out of the city. Current airfare to Venice can be found online from countries all over the world and cheap flights to Venice are always on offer.

Treviso Airport Antonio Canova

Website: www.trevisoairport.it

Approximately 30 km from Venice, Treviso Airport is an “urban” airport, part of the Venice Airport System. Charter flights, cargo flights and low cost airlines like Ryanair, Transavia and Bellair are directed here.

While planning your journey from the Airport or the mainland to your hotel or to the Conference Venue in Venice Lido, consider that if you reach Venice by bus or car taxi you will arrive to “Piazzale Roma” the car terminal, and then you will have to reach your destination by foot or using waterbuses(vaporetto). If you decide to reach Venice from the Airport by water, you will have different stops, and you can choose the one closer to your hotel, or, if you take the watertaxi, most of the hotels in the city have direct access to water. Once you are in Venice be VERY careful in using the water taxi, it can be extremely expensive (say 80,00 € even for few minutes), in any case, if you need or you’d like to take it, you better ask the cost before getting in.
If you stay in Venice Lido the journey is a little bit more complicated but this page is meant to help you.

The train crosses the Ponte della Libertà bridge and stops at Venezia-Santa Lucia, at a few minutes’ walk from Piazzale Roma, the point of arrival for buses, taxis and for private cars.
From the railway station, Lido is just a boat ride away using the public water bus.
Private taxi boats are another possibility. They cost more but are definitely faster and less hassle. They can be found in front of the train station too.

From the car terminal

Cars need to cross the long Bridge of the Libertà before arriving in Piazzale Roma from Venice Mestre, the last piece of mainland after which lies Venice proper.
Piazzale Roma is one big parking where tourists must leave their cars before entering Venice. There are few different parking lots with daily or parking by the hour.
The biggest is the “Tronchetto“ and it is possible to get to Lido by car through the ferry boat leaving from this car terminal.
Turn right immediately after having crossed the Libertà bridge. If you want to take your car to Lido, there is the Ferry Boat that leaves directly from the Tronchetto.
ACTV line n. 17 will take you to the Lido and you can reach the Congress Centre (and your hotel) directly by your own car.

Getting around in Venice

Venice is a city unique in the world because it is not only crossed by waterways, but it is also completely surrounded by water. The city's shape can be compared to a big fish, with two transportation systems, waterways and pedestrian routes, accessible only by boat or on foot. Getting around Venice may initially seem difficult to first time visitors but they soon find that discovering the city by foot or from the water is the best way to appreciate its beauty and incomparable charm.
The public boat transportation line, ACTV, moves along a network of waterways that cross through and circumnavigate the city to reach its most distant points, the islands in the lagoon. The centralcity line crosses the city using the two largest canals, the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal. Needless to say, the most romantic way to visit Venice by water is the famous Gondola, a trademark of the city, although not much used by Venetians.

From Saint Marks Square to Lido every 6 minutes there is a boat leaving for the Lido. You can catch several lines as 1, 2, 51. The trip is 12 minutes long. Ticket price is € 7,00 (one trip). A range of travel cards can also be purchased from ticket offices.
